I know what you mean about mojo- I've recently been super pumped about painting again – maybe it's because I can finally start to move my arm again after three months of wasted free time LOL. I was beginning to feel like that guy in the twilight zone that had all of those books and time and then broke his glasses.. I recently finished HMS enterprise and HMS Exeter and I'm looking forward to starting HMS Prince of Wales.
I hope your mojo comes back. Anything on the workbench?

Hi all, For those wondering, Shapeways FUD that has banana'd can be straightened out using the hot water / cold water trick while secured to a flat. Repulse (+ Renown and Hood) were my first tries with this. It worked surprisingly well, though I ended up with reverse banana on Hood and will have to take another shot at it.
Repulse is my first painting in a while. I had a skiing accident in January that left my arm and shoulder broken in several places (no more free passes through metal detectors for me!). After a lot of patience, I finally got Repulse finished up with a new paint job. Repulse is from Matt_A's Shapeways store - another terrific model. Unfortunately, minutes after finishing this, I dropped it and broke the conning tower off. Testors to the rescue. Ugg. Anyway, slow going, but here it is:
Nice post. I second the cleaning effort. For most of the "FUD" that I've worked with, I've only primed and then painted. A few have had resin seep through the paint. It's not horrible, but it is noticeable in some lighting. Better to take the extra time to clean and sun dry it. Good luck - the detail is worth it
Well, since I got an airbrush about a year ago (I have wanted one since I was in high school) I do my priming with that now. In general, the Tamiya spray can primer has the best reputation among scale modelers. That is mostly what I used the last few years until I got my airbrush.
+1 exactly this.
I had a bit of trouble with the Tamiya spray primer consistency, but I'm pretty sure it was me and not the primer. I also found it took a while for the smell to dissipate. That said, coverage was good and application pretty easy with 1 coat.
This is fascinating. I have so far only done modest cleaning on any models. I noticed the metallic bleed through the primer on a couple, but I thought it was the primer because the problem went away when I switched to a different brand and consistency. I have noticed that some FUD models are more "milky" than others and some are more waxy. One thing I've noticed is that if one of those two conditions appears, it does so about a week or two after shipment. Looking at the last dozen ships in my recent order, I have a few of each. I'll try some combination of clean and sun depending on the condition. Thanks for the info!!!
