I've been using primer from The Army Painter. I love how well it covers and it's very smooth. However, it's not only expensive, but I rarely get a whole can's worth of use. It's not a clogged head and I can tell I've got about half a can left, but it starts to spurt out instead of coming out in a nice, fine mist. I've done some research, but haven't found others talking about the same thing.
So, I'm looking for recommendations from this group. Let me know what you use to prime your models.
When you finish a spray session do you turn the can upside down and let it spray until paint stops coming out? That is how to keep the pickup hose and nozzle clean. It wastes a little paint, but not as much as half a can!

I have used Army Painter, Testor's, Tamiya, Vallejo, and Mr. Surfacer. They can all do a good job IMO. In general I find it is my own technique that is lacking. The big thing is keeping the nozzle clean so you don't get spattering. Let it spray for a second or two when you start to make sure the nozzle is cleaned out and you are getting a smooth spray. (In addition to spraying it out clean when you finish by holding the can upside down.)
Thanks, weeds. I'm pretty religious about turning the can upside down when I'm done and blowing the paint out of the head/nozzle until it's just pressurized gas coming out. I've even started swapping out the head/nozzle for one I know is clean & clear and I still get the same problem.
Well, since I got an airbrush about a year ago (I have wanted one since I was in high school) I do my priming with that now. In general, the Tamiya spray can primer has the best reputation among scale modelers. That is mostly what I used the last few years until I got my airbrush.

+1 exactly this.
I had a bit of trouble with the Tamiya spray primer consistency, but I'm pretty sure it was me and not the primer. I also found it took a while for the smell to dissipate. That said, coverage was good and application pretty easy with 1 coat.

What primer are you using with your airbrush now?
"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"

I use Vallejo and Stynylrez. The scale modelers in my local club really like Stynylrez. It is made by the Badger airbrush company.
