Notes:
A single downward firing 20 mm cannon was field installed on some aircraft to attack PT-boats. After November 1944 some had a factory installed cannon. Also after November 1944 some were equipped with surface to air radar and others with magnetic airbourne submarine detection (MAS) devices, but the aircraft had to fly only 30 to 40 ft above the surface to detect a sub.
The most numerous IJN floatplane (1,418 built). Originally designed for reconnaissance and maritime convoy protection, they were operated from battleships, cruisers, seaplane tenders, and shore bases. They were used for anti-shipping, anti-submarine, and coastal bombing missions. Later in the war they flew anti-submarine patrols in threes. One plane would have the MAD device.
