Service History: Not a Z-plan ship although the Z plan called for more of them to be built. The last attempt by the Kriegsmarine to design an ocean-going light cruiser for commerce raiding. There was considerable debate (bickering) over the design for two years before the design was finally approved. They are actually a down grade from the Nurnberg/Liepzig class in terms of armament. Keel of first ship laid November 1938 with three started by 1939. But all canceled with the start of the war. Conway's says same propulsion as Nurnberg/Leipzig, about the same size and displacement, but only twin turrets of the type fitted as Bismark's secondary but in lighter turrets. Cruisers of WWII says speed goal could not be reached with machinery they could fit in the hull. The extra displacement was meant to allow for machinery and fuel to provide long range, but the hull was too small. They would have probably had some 20 mm AA added by the time of completion, but no information on how much. Nurnberg had four 20 mm so that is what I put on this one. I could not find any information on possible names. The Kriegsmarine did not typically give their ships a name until commissioning. So we are on our own. Previous light cruisers were named after cities. I think in the past we have looked at the names of WWI ships of similar class that were not in use yet.
