The magazine is very thin and doesn't offer anything I didn't already know. However it would be good for an introduction to WW2 naval war. The model is 1:1000 scale and looks OK. I'm hoping there's enough ship types so I can play a W@S game with them :-D
The magazine comes out fortnightly. Yes back issues are available if you subscribe. The hull is metal and the deck and superstructure is plastic. The model is WYSIWYG. My photo is straight out of the packaging. I haven't ordered it yet, I just picked up Issue No1 from the newsagent.
Issue 1 = Yamato Issue 2 = HMS Hood Issue 3 = Bismarck Issue 4 = HMS Prince of Wales Issue 6 + Scharnhorst?
I'm thinking of subscribing if I think it's worth it.
Although the magazine is very thin I'm actually enjoying reading it. I think the magazine is German and unlike American/British magazines that focus on victories and nuts and bolts this magazine focuses on the human experience.
It states that after the Battle of Jutland they decided to add more armour to the Hood which lowered her freeboard by 4" which meant that the aft quarter deck was usually awash with sea water which flooded the below decks through hatches and ventilation shafts making her a very "wet" ship. Because of this there was a lot of sickness on board due to the high levels of moister. with this in mind it is very unlikely that they would have added more deck armour because this would have lowered her freeboard even more making life on board unbearable.
It also covers the emotional side of the Mers-El-Kebir raid.
Very interesting to see these ships from another perspective.
I can confirm that the Scharnhorst, Admiral Graf Spee and Prinz Eugen are in the collection.
The Bismarck is in the next Issue and will have the Swastika's on her decks. I know this maybe a sensitive issue but at least she will be historically accurate.
