I think Germany, as a country, HAD to ban Nazi associated images. Because they were government sponsored, if the succeeding government permitted them to be used by it's citizenry, that's a level of condoning it.
It would be saying, on some level, that the Nazi party and its associated actions were ok.
This is not the place to be talking about Confederacy throw backs or it's symbolism
I understand the reasoning for the banning of the swastka, I'm just saying it doesn't work. I don't believe Russia banned the Hammer and Sickle after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989. I understand the circumstances were different, but I don't think Stalin was any better than Hitler. He sure wasn't afraid to commit mass murder.
The Germans banned the Nazi Party and the swastika in an effort to wash the slate clean, to put it in the past and start a new beginning. Good idea, with good intentions that doesn't work. It is an attempt to paper over the past and try to forget, to channel people's thoughts, their thinking. Remember this was 1949, not 1945 when the Allies were in complete control. This was the German people that did this. It was shortsighted in my opinion, for obvious political reasons...as usual.
