How about this?

The P-38 “F” version of the Lightning entered USAAF service in February 1942, soon after the United States entered the war. In addition to more powerful engines, the “F” series were the first to be equipped with external weapon racks capable of carrying drop tanks, bombs, torpedoes, or smoke generators. These fighters saw their first wide-scale use during the North African campaign. P-38Fs proved to be especially effective at intercepting and destroying German cargo and transport aircraft over the Mediterranean, earning the nickname "the fork-tailed devil" from the Luftwaffe.
