There was a little dissatisfaction with the P-38G in the first deck, but I think mainly it was just over-costed by a point. I have summarized the variants below. It looks to me like a land based fighter-bomber "J" variant in 1943 would be the most likely variant that is sufficiently unique from the existing G. But other roles are possible (recon for instance).
P-38 Lightning - variant tbd (but not the G)

SAs - Suggestions
Land Fighter - This unit can't be based on a Carrier, and it can't benefit from the expert dogfighter bonus.
Land Fighter-Bomber - This unit can't be based on a Carrier, and it can't benefit from the Expert Dogfighter or Expert Dive Bomber bonuses
Fighter-Bomber - When you place this unit during the Air Mission phase, declare whether this unit's type will be Fighter or Dive Bomber this turn. It can make Bomb attacks only while it's a Dive Bomber. While a Dive Bomber, reduce its Armor and Vital Armor each by 1.
plus
Mission Selection - This unit counts as either a Dive Bomber or a Fighter. (Choose the unit's role when you place it during the Air Mission phase.)
Notes:
P-38A - prototype pre-production variant
P-38B and C - variant projects that were not pursued
P-38D - Ordered by RAF, but found lacking (no superchargers for one thing) Most converted to F or G variants
P-38E - Last variant produced before Pearl Harbor - half of them converted to photo-recon "F-4"
P-38F - entered service February, 1942. First to be able to carry external drop tanks, 1,000 lb bombs, 22 in torpedoes, or smoke producing apparatus. First large-scale use in North Africa. Excellent at intercepting cargo and transport aircraft, but found to be lacking as fighters.
P-38G - August 1942 arrived in England and soon in all theaters. More powerful engines, but tendency for engines to overheat.
P-38H - May, 1943 Stop gap production of 600 "J" aircraft with "G" intercoolers and radiators because of lack of supply of new equipment.
P-38J - August 1943 Fixed engine overheating with new intercoolers and radiators, other handling improvements and increased fuel capacity. In extensive use by early 1944
P-38K - single experimental aircraftP-38L - June 1944 Most produced version - slightly more powerful engine, outer wings could carry five rockets.
P-38M - 75 P-38Ls converted to night fighters.
