Known as a torpedo boat, Hiyodori was closer to a destroyer escort in size and use. By the time Japan entered World War II she was already battle hardened from service during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Hiyodori escorted the invasion force that took Hong Kong and remained off the coast of China until mid-1942 when she started escorting Pacific convoys. On 16 February 1943, Hiyodori, assisted by submarine chaser No. 18, is credited with sinking USS Amberjack with depth charges. Hiyodori was torpedoed sunk by USS Gunnel on 17 November 1944.
