Auxiliaries and installations are way over done inn terms of SAs versus actual use.
Subhunter is the point of the units selection, as i understood it
Actually the unit was marked more as a scenario/convoy unit from selection. The IJN isn't hurting for DD Subhunters as much as it used to be, either and the early discussion in the thread debates how warranted subhunter really is on the unit. While the IJN does have several scenario type pieces of its own, there aren't very many cheap and useful convoy/aux type pieces in the DD range. The convoy stuff is more this unit/class's bailiwick, so IMO those SA's should be played up. .

A speed 2 destroyer doesn't have to sit totally in the "convoy niche" tackle box IMO. Give it a little more use. I don't think the cost would be wildly affected. As pointed out, the Convoy SAs are only useful if you pair the unit with an Auxiliary. Disconnected SAs that aren't additive don't have to increase the cost quite as much. I nominated this specific member of the class precisely because it actually sank a sub. The IJN can use all the help it can get in that arena IMO. It's still hardly world beating with an ASW 4.

I came up with this combo while thinking about HMS Hotspur. But I think maybe it would fit better here?
ASW Team (or some name like that) - During your Surface Attack step, if another friendly unit has made an ASW attack against an enemy Submarine, this unit can roll one extra attack die when making ASW attacks against that enemy Submarine this turn.
This would trigger if the target had been attacked by an aircraft or a ship.
Combining that with Sub Hunter would make it a pretty decent ASW unit IMO. You would know at the end of the Sea Movement step if you could set up the SA by putting an ASW aircraft in the sector in the Air Placement step. That gives a player at least some chance of creating and triggering the SA IMO.
Based on this:
ASW Swarm - During your Air Attack step, if another friendly aircraft makes an ASW attack against an enemy Submarine, this unit rolls one extra attack die when making ASW attacks against that enemy Submarine this turn.

I like this but if your opponent has a spare fighter it maybe triggered less often than it seams.
You do realise you've re-worded and re-named an SA. I thought you were opposed to such things?

I apologize for the misunderstanding. I am all for repurposing an SA for a similar use mechanic. What I don't like is the exact same SA getting a different name.
In this case I am not aware (please correct me if I am wrong) of an SA that gives a +1 boost to a surface ship ASW attack if the target sub has already been attacked that turn.

Well, as with most aircraft ASW, it does force your opponent to use a fighter that he might have preferred to use elsewhere. If the "coordinated ASW" attack is important you could give the ASW aircraft a fighter escort.
Hmm. do we have an SA called "Coordinated ASW?" If not, that could be a good name for the SA.

Sub-Hunter - At the end of the second player's Sea Movement step, you may place this unit in an adjacent sector that contains an enemy Submarine
Early Deployment - This unit may deploy in any sector on your side of the map. you may deploy one Cruiser or Destroyer in this unit's sector. Each unit deployed this way can't claim an objective on turn 1 or 2
You now have a unit that can start anywhere on your side of the map (possibly harassing an infiltrating sub), with another cruiser/destroyer and a R3 torpedo attack on turn 1. This unit could possibly target an enemy ship on Turn 1 of the game and get all the Torpedo boosts that the IJN have. Actually kind of scary.
Just give it the Convoy Close Escort and Guard the Convoy, drop the Sub Hunter. Especially since it loses the use of two special abilities if it leaves a sector with an auxiliary. That should keep the points down.
I agree, as the Japanese used this class to escort merchants/auxiliaries, desiring not to encumber their larger fleet destroyers in that role and before they had completed any of their Matsu-class destroyer escorts.
