I can see what they were going for with Unryu, but I just don't think it works. This was a three class limit (more if you play it that way) carrier that needed to be able to compete with the Essex class, and a 2 cap was not the solution. I'd say the team card is good, but I think one ought to add +1 cap to make it 3, and increase the points from 15 to 19.
Soryu is super risky because of her vulnerability, and the fact that her many supportive SA's cause aircraft to want to take off the head of the snake ASAP. In most battles I've played Soryu is the first target of the enemy player.
The best bet with Soryu IMO is to put her next to another good AA escort (preferably not another carrier, if your opponent vitals the unit with his first bomb attack and still has aircraft to attack with, that's trouble), and hope that your Zeros can defend you. Use the turn one "Surprise" SA along with the EDF 2 to push a Zero to 10 dice and hope it works out.
Very good points, but if you can tie down a PBY and Avengers than that protects your CVs for another turn, which as an IJN player could make the difference between winning and losing. Much like rugby, the more opponents you can force to engage a single player the better.
I'm currently working out a scenario to test the I-26 in this fashion, but still have yet to acquire the minis for it. I hope to do an AAR, but that probably won't be out until this summer.
I am also working on other threads about misunderstood units (sneak peak at the next one: USS Lexington!), to try to see how others feel about these units, gain a better understanding, and generate some more talk on the new forum.
I always wondered why almost every IJN ship got LLT but the subs never did. It makes sense though, that these subs would have been able to do so much more damage that they probably could be considered more powerful than the U-Boats.
Looking at my recent thread about the I-26, this could have been the absolute killer to USN BBs and CVs.
Then again, maybe it would have been a good equalizer, as the USN air is pretty widely regarded as OP.
I can see where it can begin to be a problem, but again my point about tying down USN DDs, which give you a good target for your dive bombers. Also, the US don't prepare too drastically for a sub power build, that's more of a UK thing.
It could work really well I think on a long, open, battles where the carriers have to fend for themselves.
That said it really does come down to who places first.
