HMS Indomitable was originally planned as the fourth Illustrious-class carrier but was modified during construction to include a second hanger deck on top of the first. This allowed her to carry a fourth squadron of twelve planes. After going aground in the Caribbean, she was unable to join Force Z at Singapore. Following repairs, Indomitable joined the Eastern Fleet where she survived the Japanese raid into the Indian Ocean. She then transferred to the Mediterranean where she survived bomb hits, near misses, and torpedo damage. At war’s end she was again operating in the Far East.
