This week we have the Light carriers USS Belleau Wood and Ryuho. Ryuho was a Forumini pick and Belleau Wood was a Team Ryujin developer pick.
Belleau Wood has an increase in Armor by +1 because the remaining Independence class carriers received armor belts after the first two were completed. We also dropped the AA to a far more realistic AA6. After the initial discussion on changing the base stats this card developed pretty quickly and went through play testing without much comment. A solid pair of aircraft boosting SAs and off she goes!
This one triggered a lengthy discussion between the usual two factions of "carrier should be able to base at least one aircraft" and the "carrier capacity was too low and should be handled by Special Ability/"ghost" aircraft. (It should be noted that her actual capacity was 24 aircraft plus 7 in reserve. "In reserve" means stored in a crate to be assembled as a replacement in IJN use.) A long thread ensued. In the end the "give it cap 1" camp won out. This is very much a niche card for a specific strategy. Low cost, vulnerable, but has the very popular "Replenish Airbase" SA to resurrect one of your destroyed aircraft. Plus she can provide one aircraft for CAP and the all important placement advantage.

Like Belle Wood; but i don't know how this as is doesn't obsolete Independence.
Ryuho; it is what it is; but for the sake of more interest for 10points you couldn't have added an SA Not like it didn't deserve something like; in its career;; Near Miss -- Evade Bombs or Determination Just thinking a 9-10-11 point 1-6-3 defensive line set of CVE's does adds some build flexibility, with a very good mix of SA's

I was a strong advocate for having it as inexpensive as possible.
Having a cheap cap 1 with replenish, I argued would be a really useful support carrier. Especially for the Japanese where every point counts. So I really felt it better to keep off any extra SAs just to keep the cost down

Much of the conversation was reconciling the merits of escort carriers in general. While agreed that they are a niche unit, what to do to deal with that was hotly conested. There was also a detour where makimg a axis clone of the argus was considered
“Not worth the points in any situation.” “Good value because of the SA.” “How can you both Replenish and have a full wing of your own aircraft with that small of capacity?”

And I was a strong advocate for adding Expert Dog 1. .... I lost.

My argument for that and the cheap crowd; you get what you pay for!!! Their is a cheap 1cap to begin with the SA isn't really that big a deal OPG 50/50 chance and i can but it for 5 points with Akitsu You can see what a difference last Team made with Zuiho; may i say a good innovative addition for the game and the IJN builds. Sorry to me when you do something with less Skua comes to mind you've made an unapproachable unit, you fell way short on this. You wanted a yawner you got a yawner.
Unfortunately when we’re in the 11th release of a World War II game and it’s time for the fourth 1/6/3 or 1/7/3 Carrier for the same nation it gets hard to tread new ground, especially with any sort of eye on history.

I'm a fan of how Ryuho came out, looking forward to deploying my beautifully camouflaged Shapeways sculpt of this ship with the rest of the Combined Fleet. In seriousness, good job with the SA that supports a real capability of the ship but doesn't make the ship too expensive.
