Does anyone know or have a rationale for why Fletchers are the only destroyers with an armor of three (it is a 3/7/2 ship)? I mean it is one of the coolest things about using a Fletcher in a build. Mostly I've wondered why this is so with the Fletcher class but not the Allen Sumners class (2/7/2) since the Sumners, while about the same length had higher tonnage and overall was a larger ship (broader) then the Fletcher.
If tonnage and size were the driver, then several destroyer classes represented in War at Sea have the Fletcher beat (and almost all are longer then the Fletcher): The French Aigle (2/7/2) & especially the Mogador (2/8/2), the German Type 1936A (2/8/2), Japanse Akitsuki (2/8/2) and Shimakaze (2/8/2). So tonnage or size doesn't seem to be the specific reason.
Considering the larger destroyers, a couple like the Aigle and Sumners probably should have been 2/8/2 not 2/7/2 as tonnage would seem to at least play a roll in Vital Armor.
I don't know the answer, I have always wondered this myself. It may have been an issue of not understanding the unseen ramifications as the decision was made very early one. For instance, long lance torpedoes were made way more powerful than intended, and also cruisers being overcosted, such as Myoko.
This was brought up once before; When the Fletcher where ready to go on line the US was one of those country's that could lavishly apply those special steels; STS etc. was one. As it was said they were the ships that won the war; so to me it was one of RB's intangibles to the game, along with the Vidal 9 to the Wildcat and Light Defensive armament to the Helldiver;; so on. Those that go by Industry Standards and think they are making the perfect Barbie Doll game;;; have lost me. The Wildcat wasn't as good as the Zero in ways; but History tells you they held their own and did OK; maybe thats just an intangible. Their are card makers that will say that an SA or value just doesn't fit the guidelines for that units; i say put them where the sun don't shine; If you do your research you'll find the intangibles. We know the few that need errata, and thats a House Rule matter, few players will see eye to eye on a fix.
