I'm unshure what scenario objectives in WaS actually represent, apart from being an incentive to move your ships and to prevent turtling. Are they some heavily abstracted general goals, like dominate the seas or check shipping lanes etc?
If so, wouldn't it ne nice to name the three objectives, if only for reference or fluff?
I agree with you that they objective exist to prevent turtling. Often they are called "top", "center" and "bottom". Not very nautical, however practical!

They could also be the site of a wreck (picking up survivors), a place to pick up fuel or bullion, or maybe a sensitive intelligence point that has to be cleared of enemy eyes.
It also depends on your definition of destroyed. If I remember correctly destroyed doesn't automatically mean sunk it means that the ship is no longer capable of fighting.
At that point winning an objective is representative of gaining the upper hand in that area of engagement.
So the objective is more a concept rather than something physical

When my friends & I played, we rarely used objectives. We fought until one side won. These games may have lasted a little longer, but they were a lot of fun. I love a good slug-fest!
I enjoy plying W@S and other Naval games. I also enjoy starship combat games such as Full Thrust. And I love playing BattleTech.
