You might benefit from a basecoat, followed by two-three coats of Gloss Coat, before doing your final painting. I've found this minimizes the "sandstone" texture of "Soft, White & Flexible" plastic.

Either that or go with the FUD; now that they are 30% cheaper it is well worth it.

+1. It makes a huge difference to paint two gloss coats first. I use Mr. Surfacer 1000 primer for my first coat and a clear gloss as my second coat before painting.

It is solvent based. You have to use lacquer thinner to clean your brush and thin the primer if it gets too thick over time. It has small clay particles in the primer used by scale modelers to fill in scratches. I strongly recommend you brush it on. Brushing pushes the paint and particles a bit into the recesses of the rough surface. I have tried the spray and it just scatters the clay particles on the low and high spots and makes it worse. Note that WSF is very porous and it will soak up a lot of primer. This is good actually because it leaves the clay particles on the surface to fill in. Another advantage is you will get a sealed surface to paint on. If you don't put on a primer or gloss coat the WSF will soak up your paint and require several coats to saturate the porous plastic anyway. It is fine to use acrylics on it. I put a coat of clear gloss acrylic over it myself. That gloss coat can be difficult to paint over. Some people will put a matt/flat clear coat over the gloss coat to help the paint stick. I just put on a second coat of the base color when needed. It's the same thing really.

Another trick, I will put a second coat of the Mr. Surfacer just on the hull sides if it is a smooth surface. I discovered (with my camera and macro lens) that a second coat of Mr. Surfacer on detail areas starts to look like you are splattering mud over the model. However, a hull side with little or no detail will allow the second coat to soak into the recesses and give a smoother side. Again, use a brush! The hull is the most obvious large surface so making it smoother gives a greater perception that the entire model is smoother.
