I've found a lot of articles regarding painting or scratch building. Are any of you doing 3D modeling to be printed through shapeways (or local 3D printer)? What softwares do you use? Do you have any tutorials for it?
I'd like to do a couple of missing items and I'm poor at scratchbuilding
I've looked at that a couple of times but never was able to devote enough time to it to get anywhere really. There are some people on the boards who do that sort of design work though. It just may take them a bit to notice this post.
"Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?"
I've looked at it, too, but find my time is limited and haven't really been able to dig into Sketchup/it's tutorials to really learn much. I've got Echoco's 1/900 aircraft files and I'd like to reconfigure the layout of the planes to match the WaS standards, but haven't made any head way.
If you're looking for specific minis, the modelers will often review request threads in the Shapeways subforum under the Market. If you make a post there with your "wants", you may have some luck getting someone to take them on.
I use sketchup, it is basic and simple to learn. Can't do a lot of the details and tricks some of the other modelers can. But it's good enough since I generally design for WSF materials. As far as printing services, Shapeways is the best I know of. There are other sites, but many don't have the built in automated checks that Shapeways does.
My uncle owns a 3D printer for his work, so I've never really thought of it, but by local 3D printer do you mean a local company taking pay to print, a local printer you can use for no charge, or both? Because I've had no luck with the second option
My library has a 3D printer that patrons can use at cost. It would still have a price tag in the neighborhood of Shapeways without any kind of warranty, so if it came out as a chunk of nothing I'd still have to pay for the plastic.
Thanks guys, I'll be checking for Sketchup. I've got a friend who owns a 3D printer that I could use for prototyping. Afterwards, I could upload to shapeways or equivalent. The intent is to learn how to do my own models (not only for WaS) and not rely on 3rd party modellers that might not be available or interested in the objects I'm looking for.
