Considering purchasing Navwar 1/3000 WWI minis for my dreadnought wargame, anyone else have any? Are they good?
I don't have any, but in my seemingly endless search for the perfect WW1 naval wargame, I have heard only good things about them. I'm probably not going to buy any WW1 naval miniatures, however, as I am eagerly awaiting the release of Jacke Greene's Jutland: Fleet Admiral II.
Formerly "Admiral Jacky Fisher."
"It follows then as certain as that night succeeds the day, that without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious"--George Washington
Thank you for your offer, I am still in the deciding phase. I think I am going with 1/3000 scale, seems to have the most range. Ordered an Invincible and Indefatigable in 1/3000 from WTJ, haven't heard from them yet. Is that typical? Ordered on Sunday
Not sure yet Nagato, but brother Ill let you know after next weekend, planning to play my first WW1 battle using these exact miniatures tomorrow, I can post some pics of the battle if you like. Been wanting to purchase some myself but am a little conflicted over scale Id be thinking 1:3000th is too small for my liking but may be the cheapest way to go, GHQ Micronauts are superb 1:1200th or 1250th cant recall exactly, but I have a few in the WW2 line which are simply stunning, but these are really expensive. Shapeways also have a huge range but once again quite exxy. Ill let you know what I think about the 1:3000th Navwar range tomorrow after taking a look at them.
Cheers for now

Well John and I got busy yesterday and tried out something new....after a quick 200 pointer of War at Sea of course...lol Royal Navy Vs Regia Marina.
As promised, I took a couple of pictures of Johns Navwar 1:3000th WWI Minis, we first played HMAS Sydney Vs the Emden, we then played a "what's if" HMAS Australia (Battlecruiser) Vs the German Scharnhorst & Gneisenau lastly we played the Battle of Coronelle (forgive spelling....on the fly here). So here are just a few shots of the minis we used from the Navwar 1:3000th range of WWI miniatures:
John's Navwar 1:3000th WWI Minis, just a basecoat with a light wash and dry-brush.
The German Cruiser Emden
Scharny & Gneisenau trying to be tactical.....didn't work out so good.
My Impressions: Mate they are ok, the sculpting isn't too bad for this scale, and they were surprisingly a little larger than I had first anticipated, so that was a good thing, they will actually paint up fairly well, there is enough room to be able to paint in some wooden decking on the Cruisers and Battleships so that was also good or you can just do as John as done here and give a base coat (primer) with a wash and dry-brush and they come up ok. The Cruisers come in at around 50mm, while the Battleships and Battlecruisers come in at roughly between 70-80mm. But mate the big seller for me was how cheap they are, around 2 Pounds or $4.00AUD each, but you can also buy Battle Packs and the big seller for me Fleet Packs of 250 ships, everything at Jutland which will be ample for any WWI game you may want to play for around $250.00AUD. It may seem like a lot but you think of the ships you would require for a half decent game using GHQ Micronaut or Shapeways and you would need to take out a bloody mortgage on your home...lol, as much as they are far superior to Navwar in terms of sculpt.
Hope that gives you a little idea of the quality and scale of the miniatures Nagato.
Cheers mate and cheers everyone.

Thank you very much, the Islands you see are all made and painted by myself in my workshop.
Base - MDF Board cut with a jigsaw then bevelled with sandpaper. Island Structure - Household grade Polystyrene cut and shaped with "Hotwire" foam cutter. Texture added with a mixture of Plaster of Paris and PVA glue added to the mix is fine grade gravel and sand, this dries hard and adds stability and body to the Polystyrene and gives a rocky effect. Of course this is painted dark grey then dry-brushed in light grey or dark brown and then Light Brown. Flocks (grassy effect) - Fine grade sawdust mixed with green paint. (heaps cheaper than the model shop stuff and really fun to make).
Cheers guys

Thank you so much for the quick reply! The ships look absolutely perfect, I believe I will doing a combination of Navwar and WTJ in 1/3000 scale. I am currently still working my WW1 naval wargame out, if any of you are interested in playtesting the rules that'd awesome!

@nagato - I am very much interested Nagato if it is "Fastplay" in the same spirit as W@S, John and I played a horrible rule-set called Shipbase III, I gotta say I'm not a fan of computer generated or automated randomisation which this set used. To give a quick example, in the last game my Heavy Cruisers continued to miss time and time again...and not just some turns Nagato, but with the exception of two turns, they missed every other turn and the game ran for approximately 20 turns, now that simply just does not happen....lol
So yeah mate looking to either play some variation of Forumini's "Dreadnaught Rising", or if someone knows of something fastplay Id be keen to hear about it, Id rather something without facing rules though.
@12-7 Gamer - Cheers Bill, mate you are too kind, I've always been a fan of terrain building since my Warhammer Fantasy days, way back.....oh a millennium ago it seems...lol, but its good to have been able to bring a few of those tricks across to Naval Gaming, not that we require too much in terms of that sort of thing but yeah I find it fun to do that sometimes as a change from painting minis. Thanks mate.
Cheers guys
