Interesting to note that the polish government has still not given up looking for her after decades of trying to locate the wreck in the north sea. It seems another expedition will be trying again at some point. Several wrecks have been discovered during the searches including WW1 & WW2 RN subs but no luck. Cause of sinking, still to be clarified too but thought to be either a German/British mine or a friendly fire incident with aircraft. The fact the UK has sealed the relevant files until 2040, seems pointed to me.
Would be tragic but not an isolated event by any means.
"That's right son, join the navy. Get behind a bloody big gun and knock the hell out of somebody"
"We went out, got our arses kicked, then came back again"
I am aware of Aussie aircraft attacking US subs, this event was all to common unfortunately. A US sub lost in Moreton bay was probably sunk by Aussie aircraft Exit USS Triton
Silly quesrion. What would it take to unsealed those files early? War been over for 80 years.
Probably either public pressure or maybe diplomatic, though can't see it as the numbers/interest won't be there to apply enough.
Only way anything seems to get done these days is to terrify the politicians on the back of pressure and numbers gained through social media/media. The current post office story being a good example. Unfortunately this is not used as much as it could be (yet) and Joe public usually just puts up with the rubbish its told and living with the consequences of things it never asked for or wanted in the first place (don't get me started ).
Regarding the secret files, I would imagine there is quite a lot of stuff to come once we hit the 100th anniversaries of the war years. Freedom of information requests will probably do it at that point.

It did happen a lot more than you would initially think, same side but different nationalities like you mention or even same nationalities. UK subs were getting clobbered by there own aircraft quite regular at wars start until they sorted themselves out and several German destroyers were sunk by themselves in a disastrous sortie about 39, if I remember rightly.
This book is a little gem and covers a lot of that type of stuff, some better known than others. Highly recommended:
Who sank the Surcouf is probably among the best known and that story has a book of its own. Ironically the small RN naval liaison teams (usually junior officer, signalman, wireless operator) were put aboard these to help offset any problems but that didn't always help if someone was trigger happy at the other end. They knew on these teams there was a good chance of them being attacked by friendly forces and several were indeed lost that way.
