In November 1941, “American Eagle” Bud Wolfe was forced to bail out of his Canadian-sponsored RAF Spitfire over Ireland. 70 years later, aviation historian Jonny McNee found the best-preserved Spitfire excavated in Europe. The mummifying forces of an Irish bog perfectly preserved fabric and other delicate materials and encased the beautiful Merlin V12 engine built by Rolls Royce.
The artifacts are on display in Derry, Northern Ireland’s Tower Museum in the old city.
