Firehouse and I played a homebrew scenario of War at Sea today, by phone since we live 2.5 hours drive apart. The Rumble in the Med saw an encounter between a Royal Naval grouping of a carrier, a BB, two cruisers, three destroyers, two subs and three aircraft, up against a Regia Marina group of a carrier, BB, two cruisers, four destroyers, two subs and three aircraft. Each side at 150 points. Each side had some interesting SAs. I skippered the RN and Firehouse had the Regia Marina. We played five turns, with Lady Fortune pushing us one way, then the other. Both forces kept their carriers well back from the action, but the rest of the fleets plunged headlong into the encounter. The RN was terrified of the Ju87 but should have paid more attention to the Re.2001, which could choose to be a fighter or a bomber. The photo shows the final disposition. By the end of the fifth turn, I was down to the HMS Warspite with a point of damage against it, one unblooded submarine, the HMS Illustrious (out of view) and two aircraft. Dave's Guiseppe Garibaldi and Andrea Doria were both crippled, but he had his Aquila, one aircraft and one "destroyer", the Antilope. I was ahead on points and we called it. Totally fun to play remotely. I recommend remote gaming if you can't meet face-to-face. The only downside is that we can't share a beverage and review the game, turn by turn...
