So, just thinking about potential new abilities to add to the game going forward, these two could be options.
Two Speed Destroyer Sweep:
Briefly mentioned this in discussion during current deck - Was a purpose built design feature in several (alternatively) of the early UK ABC destroyer classes. Speculated to augment standard minesweepers in what was anticipated to be a war with plenty of mines and to keep speed with fleet screening duties whilst doing it. As it turned there still wasn't enough of a capability in the event, hence the emergency war modifications of other vessels, like a batch of the flowers. The smaller Flowers struggled with the equipment due to draft, speed etc. (after several incidents of self inflicted damage they were removed wholesale at the earliest opportunity!). The fleet destroyer was more successful though, being generally better suited and served the purpose of clearing the way ahead of the fleet. At lot of the early war fleet movements were led by this ability, particularly near contested/enemy shores during bombardment raids etc.
An SA seems a good option to use the mine sweeping ability on a more robust unit and generally with speed 2. Although could potentially reduce speed when using the ability on a particular turn, but that would have to be determined. The ideal speed was usually somewhere around half when using the ability (hence the name), as too fast or slow could cause problems.
Submarine Combat Air Patrol:
Specifically used in the last couple of years of the war in the pacific. Dedicated fighter cap over subs for various reasons, pilot rescue, spec ops, protected transit etc. (George bush was rescued in one such rescue).
Could be an interesting variant of the current carrier SA CAP. Only obstacle might be finding a late war fighter variant to put it on!
