Most of my time on the forumini the accepted wisdom has been that the helldiver (and other factors) makes US air in the late war incredibly hard to face and in order to have a balanced air battle, 1941-1942 were the best dates to weaken us AirPower. But lacking press the attack and with only one more die over the dauntless, is the helldiver that much better than the dauntless?
The Helldiver's higher vital is worth a lot since not many enemy fighters can get that, especially if it's escorted. Armor 6 vs fighters is also a hard target to abort in general. The extra attack dice along with finish them off can make a difference later in game when ships are damaged.
However, both are top end dive bombers across all nations imo. A fleet with both is not a bad idea.
Dauntless shreds soft targets like cruisers and carriers.
11 dice: Hits a destroyer 100% of the time Hits a lightly-armored cruiser 98% of the time Hits a standard cruiser or carrier 95% of the time Hits an armored carrier or cruiser 88% of the time Vitals a destroyer 62% of the time Hits a battleship 46% of the time (this is a big difference between them) Vitals 11 VA 10% of the time 13 VA 2% of the time 14 VA 1% of the time
Even when aborted, SBDs rolling 11 dice: Hit a destroyer 96% of the time Hit a lightly-armored cruiser 88% of the time Hit a standard cruiser or carrier 78% of the time Hit an armored carrier or cruiser 63% of the time Vital a destroyer 33% of the time Hit a battleship 21% of the time Vital 11 VA 3% of the time 13 VA 1% of the time
The strengths of the Dauntless are being able to damage just about all the time with the occasional vital, and the ability to deal damage while aborted. Some drawbacks are fewer dice relative to the Helldiver and a lower vital armor. And, if you want to attack while aborted, you might get destroyed instead.
The Helldiver can roll 13 dice almost every turn, and their ability to beat fighter AA is noteworthy. Escorted Armor 6 is only aborted 40% of the time even with 10 dice. Your pedestrian 7-dice AA roll aborts it 16% of the time and AA8 is 24% effective. The 9 VA also is almost twice as durable as 8. It’s 167% more durable vs. 7 AA, 114% more durable vs. 8 AA, and 79% more durable vs. 9 AA. If you have a Sam rolling 11 dice, it only aborts 48% of the time and destroys 12% of the time. Those same 11 dice abort an SBD 63% of the time and destroy it 21% of the time.
13 dice: Hits a destroyer 100% of the time Hits a lightly-armored cruiser 99% of the time Hits a standard cruiser or carrier 98% of the time Hits an armored carrier or cruiser 95% of the time
Which is all right in line with what SBD does. Then they depart from each other.
Vitals a destroyer 79% of the time (17% more) Hits a battleship 66% of the time (20% more, or an extra hit per Helldiver per game) Vitals 11 VA 24% of the time (14% more) 13 VA 8% of the time (4x more likely) 14 VA 4% of the time (4x more likely)
That’s a good piece too, it does the damage of the regular SBD without the vitals. No Press though. If you’re a conservative player I guess you don’t miss it.
