Finally getting into the FDD roundels for my aircraft. After some success with adding the roundels to my painted planes, I've decided to do an Akagi and HMS Furious. I have read the FDD info on decals, but I'm not sure I ever saw information about painting before adding decals to carrier decks.
For those experienced with the carriers, can I skip priming and/or painting the deck before applying the gloss coating? And then apply the decal? Or is it better to prime/paint the deck.
I always prime the deck before applying the gloss coating, but mostly it's because I spray it on. I think it's better to have a nice, even coverage than just overspray from the sides, etc. Also, if you want the decal to "pop", it's better to have a very light/white deck. A dark colored deck will mute the color of the decal.
Are you going with a resin model? The FDM material will be very bumpy and you'll want to follow the FDD instructions to make it as smooth as possible.
Thanks for the suggestions. I have a mix of resins and FDM. I've had these a couple of years and I want to use the decals rather than paint them. I'll definitely re-read the instructions again. I was simple enough with my roundels, but I'm not expecting an easy go of it with a deck decal...but fingers crossed and a lot of patience.

Thanks again.
If you have a resin carrier, using the FDD decals is actually pretty simple...the hardest part is the cutting of the decal. If you go conservative, you'll be constantly trimming more off...but I recommend this for your first one. Cut...dry fit...trim...dry fit...trim...so you get a feel for how close to the line you should go. Don't press too hard with your x-acto knife, or the blade will bend and your cut won't be as straight as you think.
I haven't done FDM, but I had a really rough blemished flattop in resin and every bump shows through. Once you get some clear gloss on it, it mellows out the bumps a little, but they still show.
I'll have to redo my Indefatigable and Implacable found flight deck decals for them which will look way better than my hand painted lines. Good to see they're still adding ships. Still waiting for USS Ranger but who knows?
