Is Yamato w/IJN fleet vs Iowa w/usn fleet the most storied matchup played out in was ?
In the sense that its a what if everyone interested in ww2 naval battles wonders about and that they are fairly equal combatants and the matchup happens more often then most?
I had a very fun never-was battle between a Karl von Müller fleet and a Russian fleet consisting largely of custom cards including a super Oi (the Russians planned during the Great War a battleship that carried something like 128 torpedo tubes).
Karl von Müller was a CAP 2 carrier with 3 gunnery attacks (including 10-die mains) and torpedoes. She ended up single-handedly holding an objective against a Russian battleship (possibly Soyuz? or something that had a decent chance to vital her, but failed) until her Bf-109Ts and subs sank the Russian battleship. She also got a torpedo hit :-)

The most legendary and historically accurate match up in my WAS life was a game against my uncle who is a history buff like me. We decided to do a 1944 match. He took a Taino and Zuikaku backed by a swarm of zeroes and a few Vals. Unfortunately for him, I unleashed the world famous Russo-Italian Battleship/aircraft carrier task force! With Sovyetsky Soyuz and Aquila (carrying an Re. 2001, and a Wildcat (we were playing a bit more relaxed on the historical restrictions as you could tell ). The Aquila didn’t make it past turn one, but none of the Japanese could dent Sovyetsky Soyuz. The Russian BB Tsushimad Japan, annihilating the IJN! My uncle was a bit salty he was beaten by a pair of fantasy ships from countries who would never work together, but we had a good laugh about it!
