Hey! Next up in my painting progress is USS Johnston. These minis are from Ghukek/XPForge and were part of the US Fleet pack sold on the XPForge site. I think he slipped me an extra Fletcher class since it's only supposed to be 3 DDs in the pack (or he made a mistake and I'm a total jerk for not shipping one back ;-) ).
Anywho, from what I can tell, Johnston was only ever painted in MS21, but I find the blue on blue of MS21 makes destroyers indistinct blobs on the tabletop. So, I went with MS22 instead, even repainting the one I finished in MS21.
Tim is known to slip in deficient models as a free bonus, which is a great idea instead of just discarding them since most clients are happy to use a slightly defective model in their collection. However, I can't spot any issues with any of yours, which means that's not why he included an extra one. It's possible he threw it in on purpose as a "thanks for your business" or because he accidentally manufactured one too many. Either way, I strongly suspect he wouldn't want you to ship it back.
Yeah, he has slipped in a bonus for me on some of my orders as well. Very thoughtful of him to do that.
The paint on these is crisp and smooth. Hard to do on such small minis. Looking good!
And yes, the "blue blob" is a big problem with Measure 21. I have tried several techniques to try to create some detail, but with only marginal success. The blue paints the USN used faded very quickly, so I lighten the navy blue with Foundation white (again) to get a faded gray-blue and then I use a very thin wash of vertical streaks of white, black, and blue to create some contrast. I leave the decks dark blue to maintain a good contrast between the deck and the faded hull and superstructure. It's a lot of work for a "plain navy blue" camo scheme. But not as much as taping and painting a splinter camo pattern.
