One of the big standout traits of Tiny Thingamajig's (Roe's) miniatures is the sheer of the hulls. I think he must be using meshes instead of polygons.

Thanks. I've decided I don't like painting DDs very much. ;-)
The only thing about FUD is how rough it can get on the hull up by the bow. That curve under always gets rough. I think I need to do a slight bit of sanding or start using your Mr. Surfacer.

The roughness with FUD is the layers. That layering effect is very well known to hobbyists with 3D printers. Part of the solution is how you orient the miniature in the printer, but Shapeways does not let the modelers specify their preferred orientation. They optimize the miniatures in the print area to maximize efficiency, not quality.
I don't work with the detail plastics too much, but I would think light sanding would help. The white versatile plastic that I prefer is nylon and it cannot be sanded. Sanding causes the nylon to break down into strings and makes a mess.
The I-168 I am giving away this month is detail plastic. The layering is visible along the sides. I think subs are a good example of a mini that would be better printed vertically in the printer chamber rather than horizontally.

I am not sure if Mr. Surfacer would help with the detail plastics. Mr. Surfacer is great for the White Versatile because the nylon is porous and the clay particles in the primer really help to fill in the pores.
Let me know if sanding works!

Thanks for the notes! I'll let you know. I've got some more DDs to paint!
