My dad and I used these awesome large map rules for a father's day brawl last week. We definitely missed a few of the rules from time to time but it was a great game anyway. The scenario we came up with was a USN fleet was attacking IJN naval base and air base. Each side had a 2 subs and100 point no capital ship fleet to start on the map along with several auxiliary units. He played as the USN attack fleet and I was the IJN defenders. Each side had a 200 point and 300 point reinforcement fleet that would enter on a die roll with odds increasing each turn. 3 squalls moved around the map.
On turn 1 My George intercepted his Corsair and both were shot down immediately.
I got really lucky turn 1 and had my 300 point reinforcement fleet join in. Shout out to weeds for the amazingly painted Tanigawa. Unfortunately she was lost in combat relatively quickly.
As the initial fleets closed my carrier planes began the long flight to look for targets. The USN got their 200 point reinforcement after turn 2.
My IJN heavy cruisers had accurate torpedoes and decimated the USN destroyer group.
More IJN reinforcements. Akagi, Kaga, Hiryu all loaded with strike planes join the fray and follow the battleship line. INJ has committed heavily to defending the naval base and airfields.
The USN brings the last of her fleets into the theater with the Intrepid carrying 4 squadrons of Corsairs. USS Montana, New Jersey, and Constitution bring heavy firepower as well.
4 squadrons of Zero's try to save the naval base but are unsuccessful. The American air power destroys the first objective.
Significant surface forces finally close within range.
The USN cruisers are blasted by the Nagato, Kongo, and Tanigawa at first contact. The photo below is before the USN returned fire and decimated on the return fire.
The Javanese carrier planes suffer significant loses and spend much of the game flying to and from targets or rearming. retrospectively, I should not have put so much of my offensive power on the carriers alone in my fleet design. Corsair destroyed the IJN airfield as they flew unopposed as the Zero's rearmed on flight decks. The remaining heavily damaged or crippled Japanese surface units turned tail as the American Capital ships closed to gun range. This was a decisive victory for my dad. Overall it was a a fun scenario and first time breaking out the large board in a few years. Hope you all enjoy the recap!
