I have a friend who is new to W@S and expressed interest in learning how to, and I want to give him a good experience for our first game. I am thinking about doing ABDA vs. Japan (my friend being Dutch), but my Dutch have a good share of custom cards (including a 24 point cruiser and Project 1044). Do y'all have good fleet lists* for 100-200 points for a first timer? (ABDA and others?)

Are you thinking 100 points as a learning match, so you just want a bit of everything but has similar units? Then maybe leave out the heavier Japanese cruisers. Rufe @ 8 fighter Emily @10 patrol bomber I-168 @ 12 submarine Fubuki @ 9 destroyer Matsu @ 7 destroyer Tenryu @ 9 light cruiser Ubari @ 10 light cruiser Kongo @ 35 battleship 100 points
Australia 12 Sydney 14 Arunta 7 33 De Ruyter 10 Java 9 Van Galen x 2 16 Zvaardvisch x 2 24 59 Houston 14 Noob Discount -6
Thank you! I've recosted Sydney to 12 and Zwaardvisch to 10, but I'll keep the noob discount in mind (my friend thinks himself unlucky with dice, so the extra points might help).

This is great, thank you! A bit of everything is what I was looking for.
I am missing a number of ships from both lists, but can make some substitutions (most notably Arunta), but I think I get the gist—Kongo vs. her Dutch counterpart, a few cruisers, dds, a sub or two and a PB or two: Here's what I ended up with, does this look like a good first match?
ABDA: 16 139WH x2 + air field cap x2 5 Walrus 35 Nederlands Indië (substituted for Golden Leeuw) 12 HMAS Sydney 10 De Ruyter 9 USS Somers 8 USS Meredith (Own custom card: Determination and Lead the Attack 1) 7 HMS Hotspur (substituted for Arunta) 10 Zwaardvisch 3 Time x1 (1 VP per turn, +1 VP if a "1" is present in initiative roll) 115 Total
10 Mavis + air field cap 35 Kongo 16 Nisshin (custom card) 13 Agano 10 Tenryu (custom card) 9 Amigiri (re-costed) 14 Matsu x2 5 T1 Landing Ship 13 I-25 115 Total
You try and match up two fleets with similar units in each fleet so then it is a fair learning environment. You want or avoid one nation benefiting from some strength and giving a lopsided pairing so for IJN vs ABDA it would be LongLance torps, more air selection and very decent Japanese heavier cruisers.
Think also about fleet construction since if you have an odd number of surface ships unless one has close escort you will have a solitary ship out there. With 5 ships and a close escort you can have two groups 2 and 3. One sub is something the other fleet can work around and avoid unless it has infiltrator. One of the key things is what SA do you have and does something like Emily complement another unit. Fleet building around SA complementing units is part of the strategic aspect
We just finished our first game, and my friend (who will be referred to by his nickname "Boarslayer" for anonymity reasons) won a total ABDA success 256 to 62, and the destruction of all Japanese units involved. It was a fun game to play, and the real victory is that we will be playing again sometime in the future ;-)
Nederlands Indië, Shropshire, De Ruyter, Phelps, Meredith, Hotspur x2, Zwaardvisch x2, and a Walrus vs. Kongo, Natori, Tenryu, Matsu, Harakaze x2, T1 x2, I-25, G4M1 Betty x3
Tasked with launching a diversionary invasion to lure out ABDA's navy, Admiral Theaetetus Takagi successfully made contact with the ABDA fleet on 14 February. Against him was the famed Admiral Karel "Boarslayer" Doorman, with a powerful battlecruiser but little air cover. Theatetus split his fleet into three columns, sending one to land a regiments of marines with a destroyer and cruiser as escort, another column with his two Long Lance ships to flank the attacking ship, and Kongo down the middle, to draw the attention of enemy heavy units. Admiral Boarslayer ordered his ships similarly, sending Shropshire to deal with Matsu and Natori, and De Ruyter with two additional destroyer to oppose the landing force. Nederlands Indië stayed near Shropshire, but shifted to the centre as it became clear that Kongo was holding its course.
The Japanese had initial success, after a trio of Bettys crippled Shropshire at a cost of one squadron, but the luck was short lived, as I-25 was ambushed and sunk by one of the Dutch submarines soon after. As both fleets closed in, a fierce gun battle broke out between the Japanese landing force and De Ruyter's group, with De Ruyter and a Harukaze both being set ablaze. Meanwhile, the Natori and Matsu launched an ineffectual long range salvo of torpedoes at Shropshire and here escort, whilst Shropshire returned fire, damaging Matsu. In the center, Kongo suffered from poor accuracy while the Dutch battleship was consistently landing hits. The Japanese landing force was wiped out pretty soon (with the spectacular explosion of Tenryu after being hit by several 11-inch shells), but not before taking another British destroyer with them. Meanwhile Natori took 5 torpedo hits from a spread launched by Hotspur, and Matsu followed her soon after. Kongo's gunners continued trying to find range as they were weaving through smokescreens created to confuse the torpedoes from enemy submarines. Kongo's secondary batteries were more successful, finishing off Shropshire and sinking two other destroyers. The smoke remained neutral, and as the two battleships closed in on each other a number of fine salvoes were ruined confusion in the smoke. During this time the air attacks grew increasingly desperate, leaving each side without an effective air wing. Around this time Kongo also took a torpedo, but careful damage control limited the flooding. Right around this time however a Dutch shell landed in the Kongo's magazine, blowing the ship apart, when the smoke cleared, Nederlands Indië was the only action-ready ship afloat.
Admiral Boarslayer took two objectives, got a surface wipe, and destroyed all of my units, at the cost of two cruiser and four destroyers (though all of these would be patched up after the battle, enough to make it back to Sydney where they could be repaired or scrapped. The Japanese meanwhile had lost to cruisers and a battleship to adorn the ocean floor, as well as a number of lighter units.
Thanks again for the recommendation lists; the game went well and was uncomplicated (the smoke made for a bit of fun, but everything went smoothly), and indeed whet the appetite for a more exciting game in the future.
