Heard last night during our weekly Tuesday night War at Sea Game that Shapeways is no longer or thinking about no longer printing 1/1800 scale warships. Anyone else hear this? And this is from someone who orders regularly from them.
Their ship their coffin The cruel dark sea their grave.
Ooh, that better be just a rumor, I am about to make my first Shapeways order, and I plan to make many more after that. I just got all the Forumini decks. My heart skipped a beat just reading that.
Shapeways is a 3D printing service and do not deal in Miniatures. Instead they have a marketplace that allows individual creators to list their designs for sale. Shapeways facilitates the sale by manufacturing on demand.
Now I know that Shapeways has not been paying much attention to their marketplace lately; instead preferring to have creators list their products on Etsy or Shopify. Shapeways still facilitates the sale by manufacturing but does not host the product on their page. This is why you haven't seen any new materials lately. Any new materials such as SLA Resin (really nice btw) are not available to be sold on the Shapeways marketplace. So while I doubt the rumor is true, if the rumor has any merit then it's because Shapeways is making the final blow to their obsolete shop.
Have no fear! If this happens any active creators will likely migrate to Etsy or Shopify or elsewhere. You will still find your beloved 1/1800 ships somewhere.
By tightening up their minimum thickness requirements, Shapeways has made it more troublesome for designers to upload printable models. Or at least what I got away with three years ago is now being rejected.
But as ghukek pointed out, Shapeways does not cater to their hosted shops like they use too. The marketplace isn't as visible as it once was. The ability for designers to communicate to with their customers has never been improved. And most sales focus on items you upload your self.
As frustrating as it is, I do understand. For years I could host my designs with no responsibility on my part to make them printable. If you bought something that I designed poorly, (which was very common in the early years) and you wanted a refund, Shapeways was out the money, not me.
However, hosting shops is still a large part of their business. My sales have remained pretty constant for quite some time, and I know a few other designers that have not seen a decrease either. They might make it harder on me by being more stringent with their print standards, but I doubt they will ever just close down their hosting services.
And there might be one thing Shapeways might be able to do that no other print on demand or home printer will be able to do. But I will have to wait a few weeks until I receive my test subjects to know for sure.
Ngl I almost had a panik attack when I first saw this thread (I realized very soon after that Shapeways is like Craigslist for 3D printing and so there was no reason to believe this was true).
This would be because I have not gotten any Shapeways minis, but want ALL OF THEM. Eventually I want to have a shapeways model for every single major surface combatant from WWII and have it on a Reacher base (and leave my WoTC stuff in mint condition).
