A graduate of the Royal Australian Naval College. Hector Waller served as a midshipman in world war 1 aboard the unique battleship HMS Agincourt. Progressing through ranks before taking his first command, the destroyer HMS Brazen in 1937. Taking command of HMAS Stuart in September 1939, and lead a modest squadron destroyers to the mediterrean. Derided by axis propaganda the "scrap iron flotilla" fought against the italian navy, guarded the 8th armies flanks and supplied the besiged port of Tobruk. When then recalled to Australia. Captain Waller was put in command of the Light Cruiser HMAS Perth. Perth was committed with the rest of ABDA command's major warships in the battle of Java sea. Suffering significant defeat. Perth, accompanied by allied ships attempted to escape via the Sunda Straight. Saling directly into an overwhelming Imperial Japanese Navy taskforce. HMAS Perth was sunk, with 353 casualties, including Captain Waller
