I live in the city where the french subs were supposed to be built. So its big news.
Honestly, and it may show my biases, i think its more of a grandstanding effort for the coming federal election here than actual national interest consideration
When the contract with the french was signed. The competeting tenders were 10billion less than the french one. The swedes having being the initial designers of our current subs.
There was a speculation then that nuclear technology sharing was in the unreleased detail of the agreement.
The premise of needing nuclear subs is predicated on a "need" to operate in the south china sea. A deliberately provocative position for a middle power. Diesel electric is a more economic. Better in terms of soverignity and local industrial investment.
It’s deeper than that even, the current gov is looking to deflect from the multiple scandals and avoidance of setting up a political watchdog. The nuclear option is probably the best though. The 1 thing I don’t understand is why 12 subs? I would have thought 4 would suffice.
For when Beijing blows up the first four? I guess the question is whether four can project enough firepower to justify their existence, or if it’s below that threshold.
We're following what America has dictated for us to do. If we build these subs its 12 fewer subs the US has to build. We're closer to the SCS that the US is and it will make us more of a target for the limited Chinese assets making it less likely that the US assets wil be attacked.
