I have finally bitten the bullet and started dusting off baskets, boxes and bags of WaS stuff from around a decade ago. Since I bought it I have moved twice and I was surprised to see that (I think) I have found all of it.
Questions at this stage:
1) is there a card for HMS Renown? I am not happy about using a Repulse card on what is clearly a Renown model. It just goes against the grain.
2) does anyone else play without using the squared map? I found this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbK5CS60Za0 and note he is playing freehand without the squares. How have other players go on with this approach? I was considering buying ready-made MDF hexes and glueing these to a light backing board. I seem to recall other players had some success with using hexes.
Wizards developed War at Sea off the grid where you have free movement. A sector was 6 inches and you could put friendly ships 3 inches apart. For AA, a ship only gets its full AA score on aircraft attacking it, otherwise it’s -1 to each die. That makes it less effective but you can shoot at more aircraft that way. You can also use facing with this rule set or not.
A cheat way to do it without rulers or tape measures is to use a CD as a ship’s radius.

Thank you all. I have been ploughing through my WaS stuff again this evening and working out how to box and organise it all. There is more than I thought! I am using flat storage boxes and making trays to fit inside each box and increase storage by stacking.
While much against it as an idea, I will mount some of the warped plastic destroyers on bases cut from wooden lollipop sticks or tongue depressors.
Does anyone know if the last edition of the rules are still available? Preferably as a .pdf?
Here is a link to the final Updates and Clarifications document. In addition to that, it has been amended with clarifications on the use of Installations that the designer, Rich Baker, provided in answer to a query by mnnorthstars. After many years we finally got the "official" clarifications needed for the Installations unit type.
