I've re-stumbled across it after finding an old Spanish Main tin and starter pack from when I was a kid. Been looking into getting some of the minis and assembling them, but I'm way more than out of the loop on them.
Some of the larger minis are going for upwards of $100 which seems pretty steep, though I know it's been OOP for some time. A ton of commons and the like are around for about a dollar each.
Also, found a good deal on their terrain set islands that look like they'll also be fun to use with WAS, posting the listing link I found from NobleKnightGames: www.nobleknight.com/Search?text=pirates+terrain There are 2 sets of 6 islands and they're pretty spiffy looking, will be posting some photos once the islands and polystyrene minis arrive!
Oh man I used to play that back in the day. I still remember opening a pack and pulling Mist Walker, Behemoth, Screaming Mimi, and the Red Skull? I think it was?
I didn't even know at the time you could get a full pack of super rares, and they were all the semi translucent ones. Was absolutely awesome for me as a kid.
I never really got into HeroClix, wasn't much of a superhero fan as a kid. I liked boats and tanks and planes. I think my family still has a bunch of the Pirates CSG, I'll see if I can get ahold of them. Would be fun to play again.
Yep! My brother and I definitely had sprawling fleets spanning the living room floor in years past. I still use some for demonstrations in my military history class (when teaching age of sail) - my after-school board game club enjoys them from time to time, too.
Lots of fun to be had with entry-level pieces (though certainly has the addictive potential of all collectible games). Glad to see you're enjoying them, attackercat!
Also tossed in a Zara and Littorio for scale comparison. And a banana.
3D forward airstrip and advance naval base pieces don’t sit on them too well, but I do have flak tower pieces from HBG that sit on them just fine for markers.
Overall, the islands themselves are pretty small, and could allow for crafty sight lines through them, but each island + base fits nicely within standard grid mats and have felt bases which is nice for mats and glass tops, I’ll probably use the sight lines as the island + base all block LoS because if not some of the smaller shoals wouldn’t offer a lot of cover. Really happy with them for $35.

I use those islands for WaS. I used poster putty to stick them to square bases that are the size of one grid that I painted blue. That way the base is aligned with the grid and there is no question about island position when checking line of sight. They are just the right size!
