Muzio Attendolo was part of the third subclass of the Condottieri class and featured better protection than the preceding Italian light cruisers. She served in cruiser squadrons during Operation Halberd and the Battle of Punta Stilo. In August 1942 she was torpedoed by HMS Unbroken while trying to stop the British from reinforcing Malta during Operation Pedestal. It took three months to fabricate a replacement bow for the cruiser and soon after these repairs were completed the ship was sunk by an American bombing raid. Italy surrendered before the ship could be refloated and she was eventually scrapped.
