When the G.55 Centauro first flew it was called the best Axis fighter of World War II by German observers. However its complex design and late entry meant not many saw service before Italy was knocked out of the war. The Centauro had excellent performance at high altitude and was intended to intercept Allied heavy bombers. They also had the capacity to carry bombs under their wings as part of the Regia Aeronautica’s attempt to replace older fragile bombers with fast fighters for breaking through advanced fighter defenses.
