Only about 30 G.55s had been delivered by the armistice and had participated in the defense of Rome. Post-armistice G.55s continued to be manufactured and were used by the Fascist Republica Sociale Italiana. It is considered by many to be the best of the "Series 5" Italian fighters. It was never used to escort bombers. It was occasionally used for ground support missions for the Fascists. A single prototype G.55S torpedo plane variant was developed in 1944.
