Spotter If this unit is within eight hexes of an enemy unit and has line of sight to it, friendly Aircraft roll one extra attack die when attacking that unit.
I have a few questions on how a spotted riding in a vehicle works. Hopefully you can help!
1) If my spotter is on a transport and dismounts does that count as movement for Chatting on the Radio?
2) What happens if I Spot with my spotter and then move in the same phase?
3) If my spotter is on a transport and spots for one artillery piece, can I move the transport and Spot for a different one also?
I’m ready to assassinate some gun crews from across the map with a few Type 4 Ho-Ro assault guns and a Jungle Spotter.
I think: 1: No, I think to dismount, you must be able to move, but I don’t think it counts as a move. Sort of like dismounting doesn’t (if I recall) provoke defensive fire. 2: I think using him as a spotter would restrict him from moving. 3: I think that would work. A bit outside the “spirit” of the rules, but I don’t recall anything that would stop you.
I don’t have rules in front of me, but that’s how I see it. Would like to see a more seasoned player’s response.
I'll try this, it is my understanding of the rules, I might be wrong, then again, I might get it right. 1. Mounting & Dismounting occur in Movement Phase. You would be Spotting in the Assault Phase, so it would not. However, you must remain in the Dismount hex & not move in the Assault Phase. Though not considered a move for Defensive Fire, it is considered a move regarding further action for that unit. 2. co1191 has it correct, Spotting is your only permitted activity in the Assault Phase, as per "Chatting on the Radio" restriction. 3. Not as you describe it. However, you could spot several shots, then move transport, but once a unit ends it's action & another begins, previous unit's part of the turn is complete. You could also move transport & then spot.

What about a spotter on a vehicle with "Fighting Platform". Could the spotter use it's "Chatting on the Radio" to spot without dismounting?
I think that is allowed. However, does the "Fighting Platform" SA mean that the vehicle can't move, or since the Spotter is not attacking technically, could it then move? Maybe someone better versed in the rules will let us know. For the Allies, the M3A1 Scout Car works nicely for situations like this. No "Fighting Platform" SA to deal with. I have used it in just such a way often. No need to Dismount, just Spot & then move or vice versa. As opposed to trucks, jeeps, kubelwagens, etc, the M3A1 has attack ability & Defense 2/2.
