Hello everyone!
I started designing my own line of 3D printable WaS clones before I became aware of this community and those of you who have already done so on Shapeways. While I was incredible daunted by the quality of the Shapeways offerings when I first found them, back when I only had a couple models, I resolved to continue designing my own versions. Since I have my own 3D printer, it's vastly cheaper for me per model (cents on the dollar).
I got into WaS a bit over a half-decade ago, buying some ships on the secondary market and then stupidly selling them when I temporarily lost interest. I kept the USS Massachusetts, my state's namesake. A few years before even then, I had actually tried to do some 3D printing ships at an Axis and Allies board game scale, but I didn't continue that due to the cost of commissioning prints (I was a teenager at the time).
For a while I was in a living situation that did not lend itself to painting, so it has been only recently that I have been able to begin painting my models. It was no contest which model I wanted to paint first. The first model I designed, the only official WaS ship I still have. I decided to paint it in a semi-fantastical scheme. Colors are a bit bright and the pattern is not accurate, but here it is.
And just for reference, here are my first 120 designs. I have another 12 since my last group photo. There are more than 120 here because some models have multiple variations, such as Essex which has two versions each of long and short hull. I do all the airplanes except patrol bombers in squad and singles.
My goal is to have my own set of every unit, including the team decks. I keep track of that here in a Google Sheet. The spreadsheet is truncated by class, but I do plan on having (and already do for some) variations within classes to reflect different years or individual ships.
Let me know what you all think!
