Kinda mixed bag from shapeways.
Good news, the seasonal sale has been announced to designers. For the most part, it will be a one day only sale. The rest is for designers only.
Creator Sale | November 22-26
15% off your own model, including those made with our Creator Apps and on Spring & Wonder
Design with Shapeways Sale | November 22-26
25% off your initial design package
Cyber Monday Sale | November 26 only
15% off sitewide on own model and Shapeways marketplace
So Monday may be the only day to buy this year.
Now for the bad news. Shapeways has already rolled out a price increase, but all existing designs were grandfathered in till the end of the year. Shapeways has always had a flat set up fee for every model and then added more based on volume. That set up use to be pretty low and volume made up the bulk of the cost. Well, Shapeways has dramatically increased the set up cost. And a lot of my smaller units in 1/1800 scale cost less than this new set up cost, so they will all see an increase.
I think the break even point will see heavy cruisers and above see their cost remain about the same. The Uss Des Moines, which I uploaded before the increase priced in at $9.01 in WSF. The HMS Neptune, which i did after the increase cost $9.00. That price is only set up and my commision. Both ships are about the same in volume, so this is about were prices will see an increase due to volume kick in. But anything smaller will see their price adjusted up to the new minimum. For example the NMS Amiral Murgescu which was $5.97 will be $9.00 WSF. Furthermore, set up cost is per item, not model. So any unspruced two piece destroyers on my shop will be charged setup twice.
In perspective, prices will still be much less than they were when I first started designing when large carriers would price above $20. And I still think you will be able to get a shipping break if you opt for the longer production option. But I do feel for fans of 1/2400 or smaller scale ship. Almost everything will go up to the $9.00 minimum.
So if you have a few ships in your cart, I suggest taking advantage of the cyber monday sale. But definitely do not wait till next year to make a purchase, everything uploaded before the price change will see an increase.
