Hi all,
High time to show some more finished cards from the 5th Forumini card deck which is currently in development. This time round we have a couple of cruisers chosen by the forum as a whole. In total there will be a dozen cruisers in this deck.
To start with let's take a look at HMS Achilles :
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the only ship from the famous Battle for the River Plate not to have a WotC card, HMS Achilles is an obvious historical choice for any card project, so it's gratifying to be able to tick this one off for the Forumini team decks.
While she would later form part of the Royal New Zealand Navy, the voting indicated that the card should be the early-war Royal Navy Achilles (the RNZN not having been formed as an independent service at that point). Even then, the majority of her crew were New Zealanders, and she proudly flew the New Zealand ensign from her mainmast - in fact it would still be flying after her white ensign had been shot away by Graf Spee.
Naturally the Special Abilities here are intended to represent Achilles' actions at the Battle for the River Plate - closing the range with Graf Spee before pouring salvoes into her opponent as fast as she could in an attempt to draw fire away from the badly damaged HMS Exeter, which had taken the brunt of Graf Spee's firepower.
The UK has quite a few attractive cruiser options already, and you'll have to make good use of Achilles' SAs to get the most out of those 12 points, but Chase and Defend Cripple are both potentially very useful, so hopefully this is another arrow in the RN's quiver.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the Axis side of things, we're taking a look at an operational variant for Bolzano. The original Bolzano card is widely acknowledged to be badly overcosted, so it should come as no surprise here that the team's intention is to get the Bolzano model some more table-time.
As with Achilles, both of Bolzano's Special Abilities are intended to represent her actions in a single battle, though as with a lot of the naval engagements in the Mediteranean, the Battle of Cape Teulada was fought quite conservatively so the development team have had to be a little more creative in their inspiration here.
The use of the Scout Cruiser SA did raise some criticism in Bolzano's feedback thread, on the basis that since the two existing ships with the SA were designed with an expanded aviation capacity, this SA should only be applied to similarly specialised ships. However the design team feel that just because this SA has only been awarded on technical grounds in the past, this doesn't stop it being awarded for a ship's actions now.
In any event, at least the Regia Marina won't have to rely on the japanese or Swedish to help out with the gunnery any more!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As ever, let everyone know your thoughts on these, and if you get the chance, please do pop by the public development forum here. We're nearing the end of development now, and haven't moved across the threads from the old boards yet, but there are still some units that you will be able to influence the development of! :
