I know several of us here have an interest in history...
Can we as a forum write the history of the game so far? Wikipedia lists the dates the various sets came out but little more than that. I know I've seen various members talk about why certain decisions were made at various points in the development of the game.
Does anyone know about the development of the game prior to release?
What about stuff surrounding the development of subsequent sets?
Why were the rules changed and a new starter released?
I think there have been 3 forums associated with the game now, does anyone know about them?
What about the various fan projects outside of the sea god decks?
I got in on the sea god decks relatively late, what was the design history of our decks like?
RB's Blog back in time 2008-2012 contains a lot of his thoughts and the early opening salvos for the sets. More recently there's a few musings and retrospectives:
I know the forumini's involvement got a WotC nom of officiality when for awhile the AAM world ranks for all three games were officially maintained by forum members.
Several of us have been around a long time now (I joined in 2010 for the release of Condition Zebra), but a rare few came from the original Avalon Hill forums WAY back when. There are a few who rarely post, but I think Raevski and Weeds are the only continual posters. They are also the only two forum members to have been involved in all the Sea Gods Decks.
The first deck project was started shortly after the game was shut down by WotC and took about a year to complete. When it was revealed it was a HUGE shot-in-the-arm for a community that was still playing and loving the game. I wasn't involved there, so someone else would have to add in the details.
The second deck project tried to improve upon the processes of the first and set the "norm" for development. The 3rd project followed that same setup. The 4th deck was publicly developed, and the 5th one tried to 50-50 the two processes together.
That's some of it. I'll let others add more, or I'll add more later.
Wasn't there something like this made on the old forum? I remember a history of the game project thread that was going to be archived and I added my thoughts for what was going on during set 5 and 6's releases which is when I joined.
When I joined during the wotc years after set 5 then with the release of set 6 the thoughts of the forum at the time were towards USN bias and the Brits getting the shaft. When set 6 released with no hiryu, seafire, Nelson as the BB and the USN carrier corsair there was hysteria hehe.
You had the Rich Baker cartoons and the Hitler parody video of that movie where he goes on a 15 minute freak out rant that people subtitle to be about a shocking event or ommision in their fandom.
Wotc years were USN bias , forumini deck years were IJN bias but the Brits getting the shaft is sort of the forgotten history of the forums there was people who quit the game over what set 6 gave the UK people were extremely upset, the others I mentioned ,another swordfish,Hawkins, minesweeper etc
