The existing system has it positives and negatives but what about looking at a new alternative approach to see if you could get more historical gameplay or flavour?
Looking at most naval records in ww2 they track the performance results of conflicts through tonnage (whatever the displacement is) sunk. The forumini cards list the tonnage of the ships the wotc sets which are ironically the minority of cards now would need a spreadsheet or a simple Wikipedia look up but I think it would be doable you would track the tonnage sunk . (Aircraft and subs aren't part of this metric which I think is fine they can be part of it through other objectives).
Remove the 3 objectives and have a list of objectives that one can achieve in a match , when an objective is met you receive a marker or token representing you achieving 1 objective so far this match with a certain amount needed to win a match maybe 3 for a 100 point game 4 for 150 points 5 for 200 points and so on.
Going back to tonnage sunk instead of points example maybe for every 50 000 tonnes you get an objective. This may balance battleship bias a bit.
Have a list of actions that accomplish an objective;
* Put Tokens where friendly ships (even air crews) are sunk rescuing them with friendly ships escorting a certain amount of them to a certain area would result in an objective.
* Same deal with enemy rescued personnel which would be Pows .
* Air Superiority, destroying (Your opponent would Have to have aircraft) all enemy fighters or bombers .
* Merchant Fleet protection , Destroying all enemy Subs
* Logistics, Having Auxiliaries reach a certain island at A certain point or exit at certain point could accomplish an Objective.
*Landings , Performing A certain amount of landings or eliminating an installation that way.
* Capital ships, designate a ship as your capital ship if it's destroyed your opponent gains an objective.
* The current objectives balance air and sea power so some area control would have to remain . An Island on your opponents side of the map Left uncontested or the middle 3 rows Uncontested Etc.
These are only A few ideas you could have a whole host of possibilities.
