My son and I played an epic game of "Bombers over Berlin" using Snippersly's custom B-17 rules.
The German force consisted of five FW-190's , one of each variety in the game: FW-190A Africa Corps Ace=62 FW-190A Channel Front= 55 FW-190D Dora=53 FW-190A Wurger=44 FW-190D Rookie=36 250 total points
The USAF had 3 X B-17 bombers with four escorting planes: P-38J Lightning Ace=61 p_51D Mustang=48 P-51C Escort=39 P-39D Rookie=27 175 total points
Added 2 X 88mm flak fields near the exit side of map, one at elevation 3 and the other at 4.
Turn one - some positioning with very little effective shooting Turn two - a hit on Wurger and one hit on each bomber. The German aircraft were still positioned in front of the bombers Turn three- the German planes are now mostly tailing the bombers and one bomber is vitaled by the ace while the other bombers each take another hit. One rear shot resulted in nine successes but ten are needed for a vital hit. However, the German attackers take a pounding from the escorting planes with the Dora going down and the rookie taking a hit and "panicking" Turn Four- Another hit on a bomber but not enough because the Channel Front and Rookie are shot down, and the Wurger is crippled.
The two Germans flew away to watch South Park while the two damaged but operable bombers victoriously laid waste to the train junction.
Totally love doing the escorted B-17 scenarios. When I run B-17s Over Berlin at Hotlead, there's a somewhat random appearance order of the Axis fighters -- keeps the escorts on their toes...

Played this game again with the exact same set-up only a different player.
Turn 1- mostly just aircraft moving forward but the long range shot from the Lightning ace hit an unsuspecting FW-190. Turn 2- much shooting. Flying Fortress' shoot with a few hits and take some hits too. The Mustang escort plane effectively saves a vital hit on a bomber. USAF planes cause some hits. The Dora is shot down. Turn 3- The Mustang escort plane effectively saves a vital hit on a bomber again. However the bombers take more hits with the centre B-17 receiving multiple hits. More German planes are hit and the Chanel Front FW is shot down. Turn 4- The German FW ace decides to go after the Mustang escort and despite being crippled by a bomber shoots the escort down. It was a suicide mission though since the Lightning finishes it off. The centre bomber is hit again and now has four hits (can sustain six). Turn 5- The FW rookie is shot down and the centre bomber is hit and crippled.
The lone German plane (Wurger) accepts defeat with two bombers dropping their payloads on the railway junction and the crippled bomber presumably not making it home.
Very fun game again and defeat for the USAF only a dice roll away. But victory to the bombers once more.
Happy to report that I played this game again today. Same set up but another new player.
Turn 1- planes move closer to each other but no shooting Turn 2- The German player (me) recognized the important role that the Mustang escort played and the impact of the P-39's "heavy canon" from the last defeat and targeted these two planes successfully shooting them both down. Also, caused a hit on two bombers. Turn 3- the German force lined up behind the two wounded bombers and pounded away. The two USAF planes tried to defend but lost initiative and only had one shot. Turn 4- same as above. One bomber gets crippled and falls out of formation the other receives it's third hit. One German plane failed a maneuver roll and flew off the map and two other received single hits. Three FW's were flying directly behind a bomber in the same hex. Had to roll for collision and made it safe. Turn 5- The crippled bomber is finished off and the other damaged bomber is vitaled by the FW ace "bomber killer". German victory.
Another fun game and the only German victory out of three games. The early German focus was on the escorts and that made a big difference for survival of the FW's and the demise of the B-17's.
The only small addition that I would add to Snippersly's custom B-17 rules is that when a bomber is crippled it looses one altitude and falls out of formation. IIRC Boomer Bill had this rule for his scenarios at past Hot-Lead cons.
Very cool that you were able to introduce AAAF to three new players. Expand the circle! And you're right about having to drop out of formation when crippled. Crippled bombers can't keep up.

Two new players and my son who has played before but not the bomber scenario since I just bought them a few weeks ago.
What are the scenario attribute stats on the B-17's ? Do they have a point cost ? I can't find the info for this scenario anymore it's been a few years , thanks.

I think I "house ruled" that the B-17 COULD attack two aircraft at different altitude bands. It makes sense to me that the top turret would fire at one aircraft diving from above while the ball turret would fire at another climbing from below. But I think it would be unlikely that attacks could be co-ordinated on more than two aircraft at a time.

This scenario has no cost for the bombers and a chart for shooting and other special rules. It takes a whole page. It was developed by snippersly several years ago. Unfortunately, I cant post pics on this forum but could e-mail it to you. If you want it then PM me your e-mail and I will send it to you.
