Where's the best part of the US to live? Some guidelines... little or no snow, low/no state income tax, descent jobs, close to a college town or med. sized airport, Hobby Lobby, No desert, or must be near a major hiking trail, good health care in the area, and housing under 175k.
I'm in the Bay area CA. I've been employed for the last 9 years at the same company, and work as a Shipping supervisor for a major medical device company. Housing is out of this world, and we're thinking of moving. Need suggestions! The average house in San Jose is over 1 million. My rent is going up, and it's just too expensive to live here much longer.
I have to shamelessly plug the city I live in, in New Brunswick Canada. No traffic, no smog, no crime to speak of, my gaming group lives there, houses average $150,000 - $200,000 inside the city, 2 universities. airport connects to Boston, Montreal, Toronto and Halifax, vast Acadian forests. What else can I say Dano

I'll plug Kitchener Ontario. Lots of work available, nearby minor airport, close major airport. Commuter trains to Toronto all day. Very vibrant city, but not big and congested.
Lots of gaming including a&a minis.
Warm summers with beaches close by. Winters cool enough to have outdoor fun but not killer.

There are places in Arizona that are not desert or Arctic climates. I cannot attest to gaming groups for them though. The one I used to frequent was a Coven of Magic the Gathering people before it closed. Good Luck my friend, you are escaping an insane asylum of a state.
Thanks for the ideas so far! I think Canada would be too much snow for us. I wouldn't mind it as I almost joined the Canadian Army in 1986. However, for several reasons...that story is for entertainment purposes only!

Arizona is a possibility.
Cost of living is reasonable, Prescott is a nice place. You do not want to go south of Tucson really, the Human Smuggling is bad in that area & in the desert we have Cement Ponds at most houses. Worth considering this fine state...

I dunno who told you there was snow is Canada. maple cookies...yes but snow, you have to go to Iowa for snow. Pardon me but I have to go shovel some frozen rain now.

We don't usually have to shovel sunshine here. However, sometimes we do get earth moving through the air here, it can get some altitude with it as well. The rains can come after that event & then everybody has a brown car... We do have places that get that frozen rain ober just mentioned though.
No more Llama dramas either, today it was a small white dog on the freeway...it ended well though, dog got off the freeway & went to a mobilehome park.
Where I live gets lots of snow. In fact there is still over 2 feet of snow in the forests. It is frozen on the surface and can be walked upon with only the odd sunken step.
Taxes are fairly high for me and the government is painfully Liberal.
I guess that is 0 for 3 Dano. Close airports and schools though.
I still like living here. There are some local gamers and I travel to game.
PLan B! No or little snow, college town, med/lg. airport, 3/2 house around $200k (with land for a horse a plus), no desert, gamers in the area, Hobby Lobby, a job in retail Hobby Lobby/warehousing as a supervisor/ trainer. Or employment with a resin craft company...must have health insurance!
You can try southern Illinois, it meets all your requirements (at least Plan B). And there are several Forumini guys in the Fairview Heights area that are lurking here. (I'm in Chicago and travel down there occasionally to get my WaS fix in.) I know Hobby Lobby is in the area as well. Not sure about the resin craft company down there though...

I was thining the same thing, but I don't know how long the Illinois state income tax can stay below 5%. Personally, I would recommend people leave Illinois before things get worse due to their unbelievable, incredibly high debt and unfunded pension liabilities (similar to California). Might be jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.
Stay our of all blue states since they have the highest state taxes as well as sales taxes... My suggestion is win the lotto and let someone else rake the leaves or shovel snow....
