Let's face it, eventually the team decks are simply going to run out of ships (some would argue they already almost have) and the market price for ships will have gone up so much due to the fact that the supply is getting smaller and smaller every year that the fanbase will be so limited that the game will in effect be, "dead" for good.
I think this is a good community based around a great game, but that game in my view needs to evolve if it is going to survive.
Now maybe it's just inevitable that it is going to die, and we simply just slowly accept that, but that doesn't seem to be the spirit of this community.
I have come up with two possible options that I would be interested in exploring:
1. Contact Wizards of the Coast with what is basically a "sales pitch", displaying evidence that they can make some money (not a lot but some) off of their old game. If WotC still has the plans for molds, paint schemes, cards, etc., reprinting the game would be much, much easier, as there would be no "design cost" (there is a saying in pharmaceuticals: the first pill costs 10 million, the second costs 10 cents)
2. Create a similar but new set of rules, but based around W@S. A scale change may be needed. Then pitch this idea to a company that helps start indie game projects with the same evidence that the game will sell, and see if they will agree to fund a kickstarter. It may be better to think of this game as "non-W@S". In my mind, as acquiring rights would be too difficult, we will have to change the name and other things.
Those are my two ideas right now. Let me know what you think.
