Our Opening Salvo reveals this week are the USS Constellation and the Seydlitz
The Lexington class battlecruisers were canceled by the Washington Naval Treaty. As was done with many of the canceled battlecruiser hulls around the world, the US Navy decided to convert two of the hulls into aircraft carriers. USS Constellation was scrapped on the building ways in 1922. As we have done with other "Washington Treaty Ships," we upgraded Constellation with the standard refits all WWI-era battleships received in the 1920s and 1930s leading up to WWII. The card represents USS Constellation as she would have likely been in 1941. This ship fills a unique hole in the US lineup so we decided a "flavor" special ability was unnecessary. This helped with costing because "glass jawed" units are difficult to cost and justify their expense. She can hit hard, but 6/13 armor means she is very vulnerable to attack from many types of units. We also had a "weather eye" on USS Alaska and how this ship would compare.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So you chose another "not completed" ship - this time from Germany! Seydlitz was an Admiral Hipper class heavy cruiser that actually reached 95% completion before construction was stopped. The Kriegsmarine started work to convert her to an aircraft carrier and rename her Weser, but that was never completed either. We have the carrier version of her in the game already. Since we already have a lot of Hipper class cruisers in the game (including Petropavlovsk) we took some inspiration from RB's Jean Bart and gave her the "Incomplete" special ability. Fitting considered she was not completed not once, but twice! However, unlike Jean Bart, all base stats on the card represent the class as completed. So she becomes a low cost option for the class in the game.
