You may have read an article about the disappearance of some Second World War shipwrecks — and all the crew remains on these underwater war grave sites — due to metal salvage operations. This Guardian article, with maps, shows the extent of the loss.
Wrecks are in remote areas, scavengers blow up the wrecks in more manageable chunks, then send hard hat divers to cut into smaller chunks then winched up to the surface to be smelted once taken into port. Lot of valuable metal, brass, bronze, copper, aluminum, and other metals... The danger of being spotted by someone who cares and will do something about it other than bitch is remote.
