The big difference seems that the ffg games its optional to play with the app. I know guys that are happy to play the "dm" because it's fun.
Is the app for the u boat game a necessity?
The app is a necessity, as it alerts players of watch changes, ship sightings, time elapsed, repairs needed, etc. However, time can be compressed or slowed as the need dictates, and it will also have a pause function.
Hopefully it'll scale well for solo play. XCom: the Board game requires the app to play the alien invaders but doesn't scale well because there is so much to do with a timer.
Yes I think you're right. After a second thought it looks like the work load would be too much for one person.
I believe they're going to release a video game as well as the board game. If they do that would be best for a solo player :-(
I still haven't backed it yet, I'm not sure of how many times I'll get it onto the table.
The kickstarter page has playthrough videos of solo and two player games. Each player is able to set their own difficulty level (independent of other players), so solo players were advised to go it on easy mode when managing the four roles (I think Rahdo did a solo runthrough this way).
After a lot of deliberation/procrastination I finally pulled the trigger at 9 minutes left and went "All In". :-) or :-( I see that after the success of the campaign the designers have decided to produce the Enigma feature. :-) This is the first Kickstarter I've back so lets hope it all goes well?
I'm new to kickstarter also. The game developers have been very involved and helpful in answering all sorts of questions along the way, and they seem like good ones to do business with. I'm excited for it!
if you want to play an excellent submarine computer game, try Silent Hunter 3. I highly suggest using the GWX (Gray Wolves Expansion) mod as well. It is a truly fun game, even though it is from 2005 (LOL). It is only 3 dollars on amazon, FYI.
