I was tooling around on the trovestar website www.trovestar.com/generic/group.php?Collection=3 and wondered what the best and worst boosters one could hope to get from each set would be, so I found out. This discounted some obvious overcosts due to being in lots with other units. Intrepid and Ju 88 would still be at the top for Flank Speed, but there are some overcosts included in the average.

If the math doesn't add up, it's my fault for being in a hurry, but it does get the point across.

Confirms my opinion that Condition Zebra was the worst set. I think that set doomed WaS with WotC. Sets V and VI were probably already in the pipeline by the time the terrible sales of Condition Zebra became obvious. Those boosters lasted forever. CZ was also probably responsible for the lower print run of Set V and Set VI.

I don't remember ever getting 4 planes; but this is a good value indicator,
I always seem to get a good mix of commons, plane, sub, pt; but always at least one DD.

Weeds remarks on Condition Zebra more than likely correct; can't see why though
France got a major bump in the game; With de With probably the best small DD proxy in the game along with a lot of others in that set,
UK was short but nice units especially Sunderland; USN West Virginia and Houston new classes along with great planes.
Germany's best DD Z-32, Geneisenau is a Beautiful model; best Italian sub Da Vinci and two widely used IJN units in Chikuma and Murasame.

The Lexington in my humble opinion was step up from Saratoga. The West Virginia gave the USN their Nagato, the Fuso was an improvement over Yamashiro, the Junyo gave the IJN their variant of the Princeton, the Chikuma was a great addition, the Houston was a handy unit, the Victorious complimented the Illustrious nicely, the Royal Oak gave us at least one unit of a major class of British battleships, the Gneisenau was miles better than Scharnhorst, Caio Duilio was a step from the Giulio Cesare. Those are at least amongst rates what I thought were major good things CZ brought to the game.

Condition Zebra was too far out of the mainstream to be a hit. Too many one-offs were uncommons and rares:

Uganda
Vainamoinen
Bearn
Nurnberg, according to them
Georgios Averof
Arkhangelsk

Lots of others were class limit 2, and many of them already had sisters. These two points meant that even the grognards didn't need a whole lot of boosters before turning to the secondary market for what was on the short list of needs. Yeah, people do buy boosters to try to get a good uncommon, me included, but there was a Vainamoinen for every Sunderland. Class limit 2:

Lamotte-Picquet
Gneisenau
Trento
Caio Duilio
Chikuma
Junyo
Fuso
Lexington

After you have two of everything, what's left?

Provence, not a chase piece unless you're a France grognard
Z 506B Airone, not very desirable for most players
Agano
Suzuya
Victorious, cool!
Royal Oak, best suited for a Warspite proxy rather than its own class
Sunderland, desirable boat for use or proxy
B-24 Liberator, iconic but not useful so much
Houston, chase piece

Exactly, plus no really sexy "big plastic." RB learned his lesson with CZ. FdG, SS, Taiho, New Jersey, Bismark, and Yamato reprints. He did what he could with a rapidly declining budget allocation for new sculpts and paint steps. He told me about the reduced New sculpt budget before set 6 came out. It really worried him.

I mean they were on a hotstreak. The first three sets were pretty amazing, and at some point something was bound to go wrong, stuff doesn't stay golden forever. They managed to stick the landing with only 40 units in Flank Speed, but the minute they tried to help the minor nations Task Force style, they ran out of spots for the big boys pretty quick.

Canada; Sackville vs Uganda; Sackville a fan favorite, Unganda a repeat; still game wise a close one
France; A clear winner for CZ
Leander; another Ajax vs Greece; I think CZ Greeces edition wins here
UK; Flanks a winer; but at a close look and hind sight really by how much;;
DD's are close nice having both POW, Martlet, Victorious repeats
so you have Repulse and Belfast over Royal Oak and Sunderland still nice having them all.
USN; Can't deny Intrepid made is one, but outside of that Kidd,N Carolina,San Diego Lex. Sumner Repeats
Corsair vs Helldiver;; Arizona vs West Vee. can you live without those;; you have Alaska-Gunston Hall- Richmond and Phelps vs Liberatror- Houston and S-37 another close one
Russia; CZ blew it here
Germany; JU 88 a winner here; Prinz Eugen and Gneisenau repeats but nicer models; U-47 repeat; Nurnberg - Z-32 - FI167 vs T-27- Holstein; close one
Italy; Aquila did it here; but again the obvious Gorizia a repeat; G Garibaldi - Pegaso- Re 2001 vs 5 new units Ascari-C Duillo- Da Vince - Trento - Z 506B; I think this one still close
IJN; Again the Carrier makes the set Soryu over Junyo - Jill vs George - Nagato vs Fuso; Zeke a Repeat give Flank an edge, but
i think it ends Flanks winners;; Suzuya-Chickuma vs Aoba - Agano vs Oi - Shigure vs Murasame - Matsu vs T1 Landing craft.
It does seem obvious a couple of carriers like Wasp and Taiho would have made CZ a better seller and set; who knows what RB had in his pipe line
BUT when i open a booster matter what the market thinks; it brings a

Exactly my point. If the set had 60 like Task Force, this would have been fine, probably the right thing to do. But with only 40 units it was a poor choice with hindsight being 20/20 as always.

RB listened to the guys posting on the board too much. The "minors" guys were just as vocal in those days as they are now. They are a classic example of a "vocal minority." Sometimes you just have to know your market. The internet in particular is not a good market research tool. It is highly self selecting and easy to manipulate.

I was told by a former WizKids manager that listening to the hard-care fans in the discussion groups is what got them bankrupt as well. They let the games get too complex and strayed away from the mainstream players.

Out side of a few; most of the so called glorious units are done and that 20% to 25% remakes per set does limit one;
But i still think the set did the game justice
Canada;; gets is first none DD
France;; its First Planes, CV and new class of BB
How much do we love Mare Nostrum so Greece is added
with a very useful DD a UK G-H Class how many nation had one of those.
UK;; First PB with Loiter and a new class of BB; lowest cost for a 8-14-5 BB
USN;; First HI Level Bomber; EE is introduced; First rocket attack fighter;; new class CA; and How versatile is WEE VEE new class BB which can be used post and pre PH
with Tenn and Cal models
Russia; First real BB
Germany; Not pretty but how about a TB for its CV;; New class CL and DD along with instead of going fantasy he finishes the last of the real German BB's
Italy; New class BB with First Flag;; First all three capable attack PB;; A Sub par with the Germans
IJN;; First cap 2 CVL;; First none Zero Fighter;;New Class of CA; First low cost DD and how good is Chikuma

How good would this set be with just 3 changes; say Kaga for Junyo
Nelson for Arkhangelsk
Atlantis for Vainamonen
